Latest projections should trigger real action, not hand wringing

November 27, 2025

New projections that Australia is on track to miss its 2035 emissions targets underscore a growing gap between ambition and delivery – but this trajectory is not inevitable, according to independent think tank Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE).

BZE Chief Researcher Matt McKee said Australia already has the tools to rapidly cut emissions if governments prioritise coordinated, on-the-ground delivery.

“Six proven technologies – solar, wind turbines, batteries, heat pumps, electric vehicles and electrolysers – can reduce Australia’s emissions by over 80 per cent within eight years. We don’t lack solutions. We lack coordination,” McKee said.

“Much of Australia’s emissions come from industries in regional manufacturing hubs. These places don’t need to de-industrialise to decarbonise – they need support to deploy the critical technologies that are already commercially available.”

BZE’s National Action Plan sets out how Australia can meet its climate commitments while strengthening regional economies. The plan maps clear, region-specific pathways for decarbonising heavy industry, supporting local jobs and boosting global competitiveness.

“Across the country, industry is stepping up. Manufacturers want to decarbonise – and many are already investing in that. What’s missing is coordinated leadership that aligns infrastructure, policy and investment to help them in this journey,” McKee said.

BZE CEO Heidi Lee said the latest projections should be a wake-up call for all levels of government.

“The time for more announcements has passed. Australia must shift from ambition to delivery. If we double down on deploying the technologies we know cut emissions fast – and back the regions that are ready to act – we can still hit our targets. This is not a moment for despair. It’s a moment to get on with the job.”

Lee said shifting the dial on emissions now depends on action, not rhetoric.

“Australians want progress they can see: transmission lines built, factories powered by clean energy, and communities benefiting. When we focus on real projects and real delivery, climate targets become achievable – and Australia becomes a leader, not a laggard.”
