Queensland needs a clear path to its energy future
October 10, 2025
Reliability matters, and so does grounding decisions in sound engineering and economics. We support evidence-based planning that secures jobs, affordable power and investor confidence.
But Queensland’s new Energy Roadmap leaves too much to chance. Scrapping coal power plant closure timelines, increasing gas generation, and delaying new targets creates uncertainty for investors, workers and communities. Continued reliance on fossil fuel generation does not align with market dynamics and the demands of Gladstone’s biggest power users.
A clear plan gives industry confidence to build renewables and storage, as well as grow clean manufacturing. This is what keeps power affordable and regions strong, securing and creating jobs for generations to come.
Our latest report that will be released next week – Powering Up Gladstone – shows that Queensland’s industries are actively looking to decarbonise their operations to secure their businesses now and in the future. The Energy Roadmap increases the challenge of doing so.
Keeping coal in the mix until 2046 makes it much harder for Queensland to reach net zero by 2050. Each extra year adds complexity, cost and lost opportunity while other states and countries race ahead.
Queensland businesses tell us they want renewables, regional jobs and new industries like green metals and advanced manufacturing. Without strong backing for those sectors, already gaining momentum in the Hunter and in Gladstone, the state risks falling behind. When policy lags action, investment slows.
Matt McKee, Chief Researcher of Beyond Zero Emissions, said:
“Gladstone’s industry wants to build on its proud manufacturing history — not be held back by outdated energy policy. The Energy Roadmap’s continued backing of fossil fuels risks missing that opportunity. Our Powering Up Gladstone report, to be released next week, shows how clear, coordinated support for clean manufacturing can create jobs, attract investment, and power Queensland’s prosperity for decades to come.”
